🚨🇺🇸🇬🇧 Europe is refusing to join Trump’s Strait of Hormuz patrol until the war actually stops.
-Hegseth is urging the UK and France to help lead a naval coalition securing the strait, but allies won’t commit without an enduring ceasefire first, per four British officials and one American
-The plan: a London conference defining which countries’ warships hunt sea mines and protect shipping, though officials say it “has not progressed very far”
-The UK’s Streeting drew the line publicly: Britain “has not joined and will not join offensive US military action in Iran,” but on securing commercial shipping, “that’s where we are absolutely aligned”
-The grievance underneath, per Sen. Coons: “No consultation with Congress, no consultation with allies, just boom… You can’t be surprised when you throw a party and you don’t invite anybody”
-The numbers driving the ask: ZERO oil tankers crossed Hormuz July 27, Bab el-Mandeb transits are down 22%, and Saudi-linked crossings have fallen 46% since the Houthi blockade
-The Navy strain is real too: two carriers deferring maintenance, with a former officer warning “at some point you’ve got to pay the piper”
Washington spent months berating allies for staying out of the war, and now needs their frigates to police the peace.
Europe’s answer is a receipt: partners get consulted before the bombs, not after the bill.
The patrol is the right idea for reopening the strait, and the allies want it too, just not while the ceasefire is something Iran’s own spokesman won’t call one.
The coalition will come… but only after the apology tour.

China’s rapid progress is ending the bipolar nuclear era. In a tripolar nuclear environment, sapping America’s resolve could win a nuclear confrontation without a shot being fired. We should be thinking more about how we will resist Beijing’s influence.

Zelenskyy spent 28 July in Washington, meeting with Lockheed Martin and Trump, and attending the memorial of Senator Lindsey Graham
The day’s larger stakes were in the Senate: the Ukrainian leader is set to address senators before a vote on Russia sanctions bill

The way how President Zelenskyy has dealt with his difficult relationship with President Trump can only be praised. It was a long way from the infamous first meeting back in 2025 to the productive relationship today. Let’s not also forget Putin‘s red carpet visit in Anchorage. Russians were drunk of celebrating of how sour the relationship between Washington and Kyiv has become.
Fast forward to today and the situation can hardly be more different. Ukrainians forces achieved decisive blows against Russia‘s war effort deep inside Russian territory. Ukrainian drone technology is high in demand and even Trump can’t ignore that. And he acknowledges this.
Figures of the MAGA world are increasingly switching sides. The motives might be subject of discussions, but for the time being they are beneficial for Kyiv. Furthermore, it is fact that Ukraine is a natural ally of the USA, especially when seeing the situation in Iran. Ukraine was the first country to offer unconditional help despite being itself in a dire situation, while Russia aides Iran in killing US servicemen.
Putin has bungled practically everything since the start of the open war back in 2022. His war is a losing streak of epic proportions. He wanted Trump to rescue him and not even that is materializing. If Vladimir‘s strategy was to sell to his people that Trump will be his savior, then the disappointment is immeasurable.
Instead, it is Zelenskyy who tours the US, sitting next to Trump, and jumping from high-Level meeting to the next one, while Putin is hiding in his nameless bunker and sending his terrible looking doubles to the Potemkin celebrations.
Zelenskyy is not in Washington to beg, he is there to make the deals nobody can make, because he has the cards. A marvelous transition of him and Ukraine which by assessment of not few was supposed to fold in 3 days. 4 years later, however, Ukraine has never been stronger.

Ukraine is not asking us for troops. They are asking us to cut off the money fueling Putin’s war.
The Graham sanctions bill and my DROP Act would make Russian oil a bad business to be in and give President Trump the leverage to end this war.
