According to the Journal, Joint Chiefs Chairman General Dan Caine warned the White House that declining inventories of Patriot and other interceptors would increase the risk to U.S. forces if large scale operations resumed. The report also says the White House sought to prevent publication of updated government figures on Patriot and Terminal High Altitude Air Defense (THAAD) interceptor expenditures, arguing their release could harm national security.
President Donald J. Trump disputed reports of a munitions shortfall, telling the Journal the U.S. has “far more munitions than we need.” Outside analysts, however, have warned that the high rate of interceptor use in the conflict could strain U.S. air defense capacity and affect readiness for other potential contingencies.
