CIA declassified 71 President’s Daily Briefs (PDBs) on 9/11. A hypothetical but quite legitimate a question: Was at least some of this information deliberately fed into and made its way into the PDBs as the part of the advanced and sophisticated construction, building of the COVER for Operation 9/11, which was a very important part of the operation itself?
From the perspective of counterintelligence tradecraft and strategic deception, the concept of deliberately planting intelligence to create a preemptive paper trail—often to establish a “legend” or cover story—is a recognized tactic in covert operations. When evaluating historical intelligence documents like the declassified 9/11 President’s Daily Briefs (PDBs), applying this analytical lens is a standard exercise in threat assessment and anomaly detection.

There is a growing realization among European governments that they may soon need to nominate someone to face Russian leader Vladimir Putin in direct talks on a peace deal for Ukraine.
The main problem is deciding who should take on such a hazardous task. vist.ly/5peds— @POLITICOEurope Oct 21, 2026
British codebreaker Gareth Williams was found decomposing inside a locked duffel bag in his apartment in August 2010.
Williams was a gifted mathematician hired by the Government Communications Headquarters (Britain’s signals intelligence agency) in London in 2001 at just 21 years old. He was on an assignment with MI6 at Vauxhall Station, London at the time of his death, having transferred over in 2007. An article published in May 2012 reported that he was on a team of British agents who attended the Black Hat and Defcon 18 hacker conferences in the United States, among his final assignments before his untimely death.
Police entered his apartment after he failed to show up for work for several days in a row. Williams was last seen on CCTV images on August 14th, 2010, and his body was discovered in a bathtub in his home nine days later. There were no apparent signs of struggle, no drugs, alcohol, or poison in his system, and no signs of external injuries.
Several theories for his cause of his death have arisen but none have been conclusively proven. The coroner’s report on his death in 2012 stated he was most likely locked inside the bag by “a third party” and suffocated within minutes. Williams was believed to have engaged in risky sexual behavior prior to his death and may have entered the bag willingly.
In 2015, a former KGB agent named Boris Karpichkov, now living in London, made the spectacular claim that he had learned through sources in Russia that Williams was killed by SVR agents after they attempted to recruit him. The recruitment was based on leveraging Williams’ predilection for cross-dressing as blackmail material against him. According to Karpichkov, Williams refused the recruitment offer and was subsequently killed using an undetectable poison introduced via his ear canal.
While the Russian government has a long history of using poison for assassinations, it is very rare to target a foreign intelligence officer in their home country.
In 2021 a new inquest was opened into Williams’ death, predicated on recent advances in DNA forensic technology. That inquest is still ongoing.

Czech soldier Václav Jelínek became known as ‘the spy with no name’.
In the early 1970s he was recruited and trained by the StB intelligence agency to infiltrate the United Kingdom. He was given the codename Gragert and provided the identity of Erwin Van Haarlem, a child who had been abandoned at a Czech orphanage by his Dutch mother in 1944. The real Erwin’s mother had had an affair with a Polish Nazi and became pregnant. Her father forced her to give up the baby for adoption.
Decades later, the man known as Van Haarlem was operating with great success in London. Although he worked as a waiter at the Hilton hotel, he was able to gather information on NATO’s system for tracking Soviet submarines and visited the British Admiralty’s Underwater Research Unit. Then, an unexpected complication arose. Johanna Van Haarlem came looking for her long-lost son.
With the help of the Red Cross and the Dutch Embassy, she was able to learn her son had emigrated to London. She wanted to reconnect with him. Erwin’s handlers in the StB told him to reunite with his “mother” to maintain his cover.
For the next ten years he faked his way through a relationship with Johanna, buying her gifts and bringing her to London for visits on many occasions, all while continuing his collection mission. But secretly he burned with anger at a woman he saw as a Nazi collaborator who was putting him at great risk. Nevertheless, he kept up appearances, even reuniting with his extended “family” in Holland.
In April 1988 it all came crashing down. London Metropolitan Police arrested him after a long investigation with MI5. His cover was so solid that he was tried under his alias as the UK government could not ascertain his real name. Erwin went to prison for five years and his mother realized after a DNA test that he was not her son and had known it all along. Afterwards he admitted he never felt the slightest compassion for the woman who thought him to be her long-lost son.
