Merz pushed back against claims that ending German support for Kyiv might reduce threats such as the recent attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport. Germany has formally attributed that attempted drone attack to Russia and has reaffirmed that Ukraine can continue to rely on Berlin’s civilian and military assistance. The German government increasingly views such incidents as part of a broader Russian hybrid campaign aimed at intimidating European societies and weakening support for Ukraine.

Merz is right to reject the premise that appeasement would buy Europe security. Russia’s hybrid pressure is designed precisely to convince Western governments that supporting Ukraine carries unacceptable costs, and rewarding that strategy would only encourage further sabotage, cyber operations and attacks on critical infrastructure. Europe’s response has to move in the opposite direction by strengthening Ukraine while simultaneously hardening its own defenses and imposing real consequences on Moscow for operations conducted inside NATO territory.
