🇫🇮 Finnish military intelligence warns that Russia may be preparing sabotage operations targeting Finland’s Defence Forces and defence industry.
Major General Pekka Turunen, Chief of Intelligence of Finland’s General Staff, confirmed to Iltalehti that suspicious activity has been observed near military garrisons and during exercises involving NATO countries. The activity may be linked to reconnaissance for potential sabotage.
Finnish intelligence considers the defence industry and companies supporting Ukraine to be potential targets. Defence industry firms have reportedly been urged to strengthen their security measures and prepare for possible sabotage attempts.
Finland’s Security Intelligence Service (Supo) has also warned that the threat of Russian sabotage has increased in recent months, amid a wider rise in Russian-linked hybrid operations across Europe.
Turunen further warned that Russia is likely to continue its hybrid activities in the Baltic Sea region, including efforts that could threaten underwater infrastructure such as communication cables. However, responsibility for individual cable incidents has not always been conclusively established.
The warning comes amid investigations into more than 20 suspected break-ins at the homes of Finnish members of parliament. Turunen said such activity fits within the range of methods used by Russian intelligence services, while stopping short of confirming Russian involvement in these specific cases.
Finnish authorities say there are no known serious sabotage incidents confirmed in the country so far. However, they warn that Finland cannot rule out similar operations to those reported elsewhere in Europe.
