🇺🇦 One of Ukraine’s top army corps wants robots to replace around a third of its frontline troops by the end of this year.

The Third Army Corps is rapidly expanding its use of unmanned ground vehicles, from machine-gun platforms to four-wheeled “Hyenas” carrying up to 20 kg of explosives straight toward Russian positions.

They’re already blowing bridges, suppressing assaults, hauling supplies, evacuating wounded soldiers and, according to one unit, even taking Russian prisoners.

The reason is pretty simple: every job given to a hunk of metal is one less soldier exposed on a battlefield where almost any movement can get you killed.

As a bonus, the robots don’t need to be chased down outside a supermarket first.

Former KGB/FSB officer #AlexanderLitvinenko claimed that Ayman al-Zawahiri, “the mastermind of al-Qaeda”, spent six months in a secret #FSB training camp in Dagestan in 1997.

According to Litvinenko, Russian services then recruited or directed him to infiltrate Al-Qaeda.

Alexander Litvinenko was not an outside observer speculating – he was an operative in the FSB’s terrorism division. He claimed to have personally seen the officers who had “trained” him being subsequently promoted and transferred to #Moscow – a detail too specific to be an arbitrary fabrication.

The official version of the FSB – that he was accidentally arrested, held for six months and released because they did not translate some of his documents – sounds like an afterthought, created only after 9/11, when any connection with the future leader of al-Qaeda became suspicious.

The case also fits a broader pattern Litvinenko has described: the use of terrorism and instability as an instrument of Russian foreign policy, from its alleged role in the 1999 apartment bombings to its support for militants during the Cold War.

Ultimately, Litvinenko was poisoned with polonium in #London in 2006 – an assassination that the #British investigation attributed to the #Russian state.

Twenty-five years after the great terrorist attack on the #UnitedStates and everything that happened in the world in the meantime, it is worth remembering these details.
