Six hundred soldiers stood up in January to learn drone and robotic warfare from the people actually doing it.
They rotated through Kyiv, trained alongside Ukrainian operators, and last spring watched a Ukrainian force playing the adversary beat an American brigade combat team with drones in a NATO exercise.
After one more exercise in Germany, the unit files its findings and goes back to being airborne infantry.
The timing is what jars.
This war has turned on $20,000 drones drawing $4 million interceptors, and 45 Reapers are gone.
Russia and Ukraine both run dedicated drone branches.
The Army says it stays committed to drone dominance but has not said what replaces the battalion, and defense analysts warn the lesson-learning slows down right as the lessons arrive.
