Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth says his department “was ready to go” and “remains ready” at levels not seen since World War Two, backing President Donald Trump’s claim that a planned attack on Iran would have been the biggest since World War Two.

Here are the major global and national developments for today, August 3, 2026, with a focus on geopolitical shifts, defense dynamics, and structural policy:Global Conflict & Defense Dynamics
US-Iran Conflict & Regional Escalation: The conflict has entered a new phase as Saudi Arabia publicly joined the US in conducting military strikes against Iran-backed militias in Iraq. This follows a barrage of drone and ballistic missile attacks directed at Saudi oil infrastructure and a US military hub in Jordan.
Red Sea & Strait of Hormuz Chokepoints: Houthi rebels have imposed a naval blockade on Saudi vessels, claiming to have forced an oil tanker to turn around in the Red Sea. Concurrently, there are conflicting reports of paused hostilities as President Trump indicates new rounds of mediated talks with Tehran over the Strait of Hormuz will begin today in Oman.
Autonomous & Drone Warfare: A Sudanese army drone attack in Darfur recently killed 35 people. Meanwhile, air defense networks across the Middle East are heavily engaged; Saudi and US forces recently intercepted over 30 drone attacks over a 72-hour period.
Israel-Gaza Operations: Attacks in Gaza have escalated, resulting in 19 deaths, despite recent proposals regarding a Hamas disarmament deal and potential Israeli withdrawal. Further complicating the regional posture, a US general warned the Pentagon that current military forces may be insufficient to fully protect Israel amid the wider Iranian tensions.National Security & Surveillance
Critical Infrastructure Cyberattacks: Multiple states, including Michigan and Minnesota, are reporting cyberattacks. US spy agencies suspect Iranian actors may be targeting municipal water systems in these breaches.
Law Enforcement Tech Misuse: A new investigative report revealed that rogue officers nationwide have exploited Flock’s license-plate camera network—originally designed to fight crime—using the system as a tool for stalking and unauthorized surveillance.
US Politics & Institutional Policy
Senate Moves on Science Funding: Bipartisan GOP leaders unveiled a spending bill aimed at blocking the White House from asserting greater control over hundreds of billions of dollars in federal science grants.
Pressure on Public Health Officials: Dr. Anthony Fauci is facing renewed and intense pressure, along with congressional threats, as GOP lawmakers push for his jailing over his past role in the government’s COVID-19 response.
Department of Justice Appointments: Todd Blanche’s nomination for Attorney General remains stalled in the Senate, prompting President Trump to suggest he might resurrect an “anti-weaponization” fund in response.Global Markets & Extreme Weather
Market Contraction: Wall Street experienced a significant drop, with the Dow falling over 1,100 points (2.2%). This was largely driven by sinking AI technology stocks and heightened concerns over global oil flows due to the ongoing US-Iran conflict.
Resource Strains & Heatwaves: Record-low water levels in the Danube River, caused by severe drought, are forcing Hungary to shut down its sole nuclear power plant. Concurrently, massive wildfires are prompting evacuations in Eastern Washington state (over 600 structures burned), Greece, France, and Spain.— Michael Novakhov (@mikenov) Aug 3, 2026
🇷🇺🇺🇦 Russia just fired more missiles at Ukraine in one month than ever before.
July saw 376 missiles launched, more than double June’s count, according to a new AFP analysis. The barrage is scaling up fast.
The ballistic numbers are the part that jumps out. 126 of those were ballistic missiles in July alone. For perspective, Russia fired somewhere between 200 and 300 ballistic missiles across all of 2024. It’s now burning through half a year’s worth in thirty days.
July also brought one of the deadliest strikes on the capital of the war, with 30 people killed in a single July 2 attack on Kyiv.
You don’t fire at this rate unless production has jumped or you’ve decided the stockpile is worth spending now. Whichever it is, Moscow is leaning in harder than ever.
