Former CIA officer for PAP (Polish News) on DCIA Moscow Visit: “Ratcliffe’s warning will be effective only if it has teeth.”
The visit of CIA Director John Ratcliffe to Moscow is a good step, but only the first step, and the warning given to Russia will only work if it is concrete and “will have teeth”, Sean Wiswesser, a former high-ranking CIA officer and author of a book about Russian services, told PAP.
⚠️Reports that Ratcliffe warned Russia against provocations or an attack on NATO are a good sign suggesting a more firm policy of the current US administration towards Russia, and the CIA director was a good person to convey this message, per Wiswesser, given that Russia is a security-service driven state.
According to Wiswesser, the current wave of action below the threshold of war is controlled by the Russian services. Reports from Germany about a drone with an explosive charge found by a Ukrainian transport plane at the airport in Leipzig, are reportedly linked by intelligence services to the Russian military intelligence of the GRU. “The thugs who lead the Russian services go out of their way to impress their boss, Putin,”-said the expert.
Wiswesser assessed that the visit itself is a signal that the administration in Washington takes the threat to the Alliance seriously.
It is crucial, in his opinion, whether the warning given to Russia was specific. Wiswesser recalled the previous publicly known visit of the head of service in Moscow, Bill Burns, in 2021, when the previous administration tried to dissuade Russia from plans to invade Ukraine but it was not taken seriously, the warning lacking “teeth.”

👉I again stressed we need more pushback on Russia and more support to Ukraine.

Former Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov visited Washington, D.C. today where information sharing with his U.S. counterparts is expected to be at the forefront of his visit. Fedorov, who was ousted by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky due to intra-governmental and defense ministry conflicts, is expected to share much of his knowledge of Ukraine’s ability to adapt to battlefield conditions by mobilizing the defense industrial base and creating flexibility within industry during a conflict characterized by large-scale conventional operations.
