Russian President Vladimir Putin has now made it clear that Moscow’s ambitions are no longer confined to the four Ukrainian oblasts, but extend across what Russia calls Novorossiya, from Kharkiv to Odesa.
If this continues, Ukraine risks losing vast additional territories and being reduced to a landlocked rump state, retaining only a fraction of the territory it internationally controlled before February 2022.
Odesa and Kharkiv are increasingly being treated by the Kremlin as strategic objectives, while every additional year of war risks making Ukraine’s position weaker and the eventual price of ending the conflict higher.At some point, American and European policymakers need to confront the consequences of their strategic choices.
Dismissing Russia’s stated security concerns and pursuing NATO expansion closer to Russia’s borders did not make the security dilemma disappear.
It helped create a confrontation in which Ukraine is paying an enormous price.The brutal question is whether a more realistic approach to European security,one that took Russia’s security concerns seriously rather than simply dismissing them,could have prevented this catastrophe.
History will judge very harshly the decisions that allowed a preventable security crisis to turn into a devastating war…..
