Ukrainian long-range drones operating inside Russian airspace cannot use Starlink for navigation because SpaceX has blocked the service over Russian territory. To bypass this restriction and defeat Russia’s extensive electronic warfare (EW) jamming, Ukraine has heavily invested in autonomous navigation technologies. [1, 2, 3]
AI-Driven Terrain and Vision Navigation

Optical Terrain Matching: Rather than relying on GPS or real-time satellite positioning, Ukraine’s deep-strike drones utilize preloaded maps and machine vision. The drone’s onboard cameras scan the landscape below, allowing neural networks to match physical landmarks and terrain features with geographic data in real-time. [4, 5]
Terminal Guidance Modules: Once a long-range drone approaches its destination, integrated artificial intelligence takes over for the final attack phase. These AI target-recognition systems can lock onto specific structures—such as oil refineries, military installations, or airfields—enabling precise strikes even if local Russian electronic warfare completely severs remote control communications. Ukraine’s push for autonomous aviation is backed by a rapidly growing domestic defense industrial base. Blackout in Crimea: Ukrainian drones strike the peninsula’s power grid.

The Russian‑occupied Crimean peninsula has been rocked by massive explosions for two days straight. Euromaidan Press and The New Voice of Ukraine report extensive drone attacks that have triggered severe power outages across large parts of the region.

Here’s the situation on the ground:

Widespread outagesThe occupation‑run utility Krymenergo confirms that cities like Simferopol, Sevastopol and Feodosia have been plunged into darkness. The strikes targeted critical energy infrastructure, including key stations in Krasnodar, which feed electricity to Crimea via the so‑called “energy bridge.”

Flight from the Crimean Bridge The attacks and blackouts sparked panic among civilians and tourists. Long lines of cars formed at the Crimean Bridge, with hundreds of vehicles waiting for hours to escape to mainland Russia.

Strategic impact Ukraine’s drone command stresses that the blackout weakens Russian air‑defense and radar systems, which rely heavily on the local power grid to stay operational.

A peninsula that Moscow once claimed was “secure forever” is now learning how fragile occupation looks when the lights go out.
