🇩🇪🇷🇺 Russia and Germany’s FMs are talking for the first time in 4½ years.
Lavrov and Wadephul are meeting in New York today, the first Russia-Germany FM talks since January 2022, before the full-scale war.
Moscow says Berlin requested the meeting.
That’s a shift in method, rather than in message.
Wadephul called the war illegal at the Security Council and demanded a ceasefire. Germany also blamed Russian lobbying after losing a UN Security Council race.
So why meet? Because isolation has a cost.
Berlin still wants Ukraine talks, Black Sea grain moving, prisoner swaps, and a channel beyond Washington.
UN week offers one place to talk without looking like you flew to Moscow.
