Their removal became part of a deal to extend sanctions against thousands of other Russian individuals and organizations for another three years.

France and Slovakia advocated lifting the sanctions on Usmanov. Luxembourg sought Fridman’s removal from the list. Both businessmen have been under EU sanctions since 2022.—  https://x.com/nexta_tv/status/2102048202740404500

Putin vs Europe

Tensions between Russian President Vladimir Putin and European nations have escalated dramatically, marked by sharp diplomatic warnings, intensified hybrid warfare, and explicit statements regarding preparations for potential military conflict. [1, 2]
The friction between Putin and Europe spans several critical fronts:
1. Hybrid Warfare and “Accidental” Incursions
European intelligence agencies and political leaders have reported a sharp uptick in Russian hybrid operations designed to undermine Western resolve and test NATO boundaries. [2, 3]

The “Accident” Strategy: Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and other NATO officials have warned that Russia may execute drone or missile incursions into European airspace and mask them as accidental. This strategy aims to create domestic anxiety, stretch European defense budgets, and test the limits of NATO’s collective response without triggering a full-scale war. [1, 2]
Increased Sabotage: Across Europe—particularly in France, Germany, and the Baltics—governments are bracing for increased cyberattacks, critical infrastructure sabotage, and airspace violations. In response, nations like Germany are preparing hospital logistics for conflict scenarios, while Poland has placed its air defense systems on heightened readiness. [2, 4]

2. Direct Military Warnings over Ukraine
Putin has drawn clear red lines regarding direct European involvement in the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Troop Deployment Warnings: In mid-September 2026, Putin explicitly stated that if European governments deploy peacekeeping forces or combat troops into Ukraine, it will mean a direct “war with Russia”. [5]
Targeting Western Aid: The Kremlin has reiterated that any military facilities, foreign training centers, or logistical hubs within Ukraine—including those operated by British or other European personnel—remain legitimate targets for Russian strikes. [6]

3. The Rhetoric of “War Preparation”
Both sides have exchanged accusations regarding who is driving the continent toward a broader conflict.

Putin’s Stance: Putin has publicly claimed that European leaders are “openly declaring their preparations for war with Russia” through NATO expansion, troop exercises in the Baltic region, and the supply of long-range weapons to Ukraine. He argues that Western leadership is utilizing anti-Russian war rhetoric primarily to salvage falling domestic political ratings. Putin continues to maintain that Russia has no territorial ambitions or aggressive intentions against NATO members.
Europe’s Stance: European leaders and NATO officials view Putin’s rhetoric and covert actions as an existential threat. They argue that Russia’s “peace offerings” are merely tactical ploys to divide the European Union. [5, 7, 8, 9]

Summary of Strategic Positions

While Western intelligence reports suggest that Russia’s conventional military capacity has been heavily constrained by the grinding war in Ukraine, U.S. and European intelligence officials remain highly alert to the possibility that Putin could attempt a limited, asymmetrical provocation to explicitly test NATO’s treaty obligations. Following up on the White House’s blitz of removing sanctions on Belarus, the EU steps in to to their part to ensure Putin can circumvent sanctions.

Remember, Usmanov used to hold all the biggest online companies for Putin after he stole them from the owners.

EU countries have decided to lift sanctions on Russian oligarchs Alisher Usmanov and Mikhail Fridman

EU ambassadors agreed to drop the measures against them unless any government objects in the next few hours, Reuters reported

The deal is part of a package that extends sanctions on thousands of other Russian people and firms for three years instead of the usual six or twelve months.

The rollover of about 3,000 listings is due by Tuesday. France joined Slovakia in pushing Usmanov off the list.

Luxembourg, sued by Fridman over frozen assets, said it could not defend keeping him listed if Usmanov walked free alone.
