Former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder’s visit to Putin on his 74th birthday has sparked criticism in Germany.
Merz called the visit “immoral,” while CDU politicians accused Schröder of betraying Europe. The meeting took place on October 7.
However, SPD politician Ralf Stegner defended the visit, saying Schröder’s access to Putin could help move peace talks forward.
