🇫🇮🇪🇺 STUBB: MOSCOW WANTS FEAR TO DO THE WORK
Alexander Stubb’s assessment is that Russia does not need a full-scale war with NATO to weaken Europe. If intimidation, sabotage and hybrid pressure frighten governments into reducing support for Ukraine, Moscow has already gained something without crossing that threshold.
The Finnish president argues that Russia currently lacks both the interest and capacity for a major military escalation against NATO. His prescription is not complacency, but discipline: expect more probing and threats, identify them clearly, impose consequences and refuse to let panic dictate policy.
He pointed to Germany’s response after the attempted Leipzig drone attack, publicly attributing responsibility to Russia and spelling out consequences, as the model he wants Europe to follow.
Finland has particular reason to watch closely. It shares NATO’s longest border with Russia, roughly half of the alliance’s entire frontier with the country. Yet Stubb says Finnish intelligence currently sees activity, but no imminent military threat.
Vigilance without hysteria.
On Ukraine diplomacy, Stubb is keeping expectations limited. He said a comprehensive peace deal is not expected this week, but suggested that even a Black Sea ceasefire framework linked to grain or energy could represent movement.
He is also looking toward December’s G20 summit in Miami. Stubb floated the possibility that Trump could eventually bring Zelenskyy and Putin to the same table, calling such a meeting a potential “jackpot,” while stressing that negotiations remain far from that point.
His broader argument is simple: Russia can keep testing Europe below the threshold of open war. The more fear fractures European unity, the less Moscow needs military escalation to achieve political effects.

Zelenskyy says Donald Trump pressed him on Ukraine’s strikes against Russian diesel refineries and other energy infrastructure as Washington explores an energy ceasefire.
Kyiv’s answer: restraint has to work both ways.
“If Putin attacks us, we respond,” Zelenskyy said. He argued that Ukraine’s ability to hit back is part of why Russia has failed to conquer the country: “We are not weak.”
At the same time, another potentially major shift is taking shape. Zelenskyy says Raytheon is ready to support licensed Patriot interceptor production for Ukraine, with Kyiv asking Trump to accelerate approval. He estimates domestic production could begin in roughly one to one-and-a-half years.
Diplomacy remains on the table too. Zelenskyy says he is prepared for a trilateral meeting with Trump and Putin whenever all sides are ready, while arguing that Moscow still has not demonstrated the same willingness to stop the war.
He also accused Putin of trying to frighten European societies and fracture unity between Europe and the United States through pressure and provocations.
The formula Kyiv is offering is increasingly explicit: reciprocal restraint, stronger air defense, and no expectation that Ukraine simply stops hitting back while Russia keeps firing.

🇺🇦🇺🇸 Zelensky says Ukraine has wrecked 45% of Russia’s refining capacity and he isn’t stopping
He asked Trump for a winter package including Patriots in their New York meeting, and expects Washington to push for a ceasefire on energy strikes, though he doubts Putin moves without new sanctions since the Russian leader has his elections behind him and feels no pressure.
Trump has been leaning on Kyiv to quit hitting refineries because of what it does to fuel prices, and Zelensky confirmed that pressure is real even though prices never came up in their talk.
Zelensky, on why he keeps burning Russian refineries:
“Our lives are more important than the price of energy.”
American diesel hit $6.53 on Tuesday, up almost a dollar in a month, and Zelensky blames Hormuz for most of that.
He’s right that Putin only moves when something hurts, and refineries are the only thing Ukraine can reach that actually does.
Asking Trump for Patriots while ignoring his one request is a gamble, because the interceptors Kyiv needs are the same ones America burned through in the Gulf, and the president is bargaining hard to get pump prices down before November.
