Meanwhile, political leaders have openly clashed over the issue; President Donald Trump publicly dismissed the Iranian connection and blamed the state government’s internal oversight, while Minnesota Governor Tim Walz countered that federal cuts left critical defenses vulnerable. Target Vulnerabilities & Federal Response
The hackers targeted internet-exposed operational technology, specifically exploiting devices like the Rockwell Automation MicroLogix 1400 series. Cybersecurity experts note that the water sector has long suffered from poor funding, an aging workforce, and a failure to enforce basic cyber hygiene—such as changing factory-default passwords.
