The new German funding will be transferred to the Ukraine Energy Support Fund, which has been backed by multiple international donors since February 2022. Berlin is also expected to provide Ukraine with thousands of strike drones and additional IRIS-T interceptors in the coming weeks.

The timing is critical. Russia is preparing to intensify pressure on Ukraine’s energy system during the colder months, so Germany is supporting both sides of the equation: repairing infrastructure after attacks and strengthening the military capacity needed to reduce the damage in the first place. That combination will be essential if Ukraine is to keep its power grid functioning through another winter of sustained Russian strikes.
