BIG | 🇷🇺☢️🇪🇺‼️‼️ Putin is doubling down on his nuclear warning. The Russian president says Moscow’s messages to NATO were not threats but a response to what he described as attempts to intimidate Russia, while reiterating that a direct attack on Kaliningrad or other Russian territory would immediately raise the possibility of using Russia’s entire arsenal.
Putin also claimed Russia has no intention of attacking another country in 2029, 2030 or 2050, but would retaliate if attacked. Separately, he portrayed Ukraine as increasingly incapable of existing independently and claimed that its government is controlled from abroad. He urged Europeans to understand the consequences of any direct confrontation with Russia.
Putin is simultaneously denying plans for aggression against NATO while making the potential consequences of a direct confrontation unmistakably severe. By repeatedly bringing Russia’s full arsenal into the Kaliningrad dispute, Moscow is using nuclear deterrence as a central part of its message to European governments as tensions with NATO rise.
