NEW: Slovakia and Russia are restoring military ties after a four-year freeze, with both countries reportedly exchanging military attachés at their respective embassies.
According to Slovak outlet Aktuality.sk, Prime Minister Robert Fico and Russian President Vladimir Putin reached an agreement to resume military relations during Putin’s visit to Moscow in May.
Slovakia has reportedly dispatched two military officers to Moscow: General Slavomír Staviarsky and Colonel Ivo Gahír. Meanwhile, a Russian military officer is heading to Slovakia.
The decision has sparked criticism from Slovakia’s opposition, which warns that the incoming Russian officer could have links to Russia’s intelligence services.
