After nearly five years of war, Europe has learned nothing.
“Everything Trump has done, is doing, and will do helps Putin,” Garry Kasparov, co-founder of the Free Russia Forum, told DW. In his view, the US President’s decision to lift sanctions on Russian diesel is the result of ongoing contacts between “Trump’s people”—Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner—and the Kremlin. The politician is convinced that this serves as a final signal to Europe that the war in Ukraine could come to a tragic end.
“This war demands extraordinary measures, yet after nearly five years of full-scale invasion, Europe remains torn: the EU simply cannot decide whether to wage war against Putin or try to find a compromise,” Kasparov noted in a conversation with a DW correspondent in Warsaw, where the 15th Free Russia Forum is taking place.
The Russian opposition figure hopes that “Trump’s open attack on Ukraine”—including the demand to find a successor to Volodymyr Zelenskyy—will prompt Europe to take a stand and mobilize all its resources.
“War demands sacrifices and the conversion of at least part of the economy to wartime production; yet in Europe, we see none of that. While this is happening in countries that could become immediate targets of Russian aggression, the European Union as a whole continues to operate in ‘business as usual’ mode… Trade with Russia continues, and not a single ambassador has been recalled from Moscow; for Putin, this is a clear signal that impotence and corruption continue to dominate European politics,” said Kasparov. The politician also expressed the conviction that the war would enter a decisive phase in the coming year—one that would not involve a freezing of the conflict, but rather a catastrophe: either for Ukraine and Europe, or for Russia in the form of the collapse of the Putin regime.
