⭕️ The Wall Street Journal reported that the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump encouraged former Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán to consider running for UN Secretary-General, amid reports of #Russia and China’s acceptance of the idea.
⭕️ The newspaper quoted a U.S. State Department source as believing that Orbán could secure the support of 10 out of 15 #SecurityCouncil members, as Antonio Guterres’ term ends at the close of the year.
⭕️ The newspaper added that Britain and France might oppose the proposal, but they generally exercise caution in using the veto, noting that Orbán’s name came up during American, Chinese, and Russian discussions on potential candidates, before U.S. officials wondered: “Why not Mr. Orbán?”
⭕️ According to the report, the proposal reflects the ideological alignment between the Trump administration and Orbán, whom the newspaper described as “the dream candidate for MAGA-supporting conservatives,” in light of his opposition to mass immigration and liberal nongovernmental organizations, his criticisms of left-leaning courts and media in Hungary, and his repeated clashes with the European Union.
