Al-Mabhouh was a senior Hamas military commander. A team of more than two dozen operatives tracked him to his room at the Al Bustan Rotana hotel, entered it, and killed him in a way meant to resemble death by natural causes. Investigators concluded he had been injected with a paralytic and suffocated.

It showed team members in wigs, hats, and tennis gear moving through corridors and lobbies in coordinated shifts, trailing their target and signaling one another. The team traveled on forged and fraudulently obtained passports from Britain, Ireland, France, Germany, and Australia. Every one of those governments summoned the Israeli ambassador in protest. Britain and Australia expelled Israeli diplomats over the theft of their citizens’ identities.
