BIG | 🇩🇪🇪🇺‼️‼️ German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has acknowledged that Germany is undergoing a profound political realignment after the far right’s historic electoral breakthrough, admitting that the federal government has failed to build a strong emotional connection with a growing part of the electorate.
Merz said Germany has a strong constitution and all the necessary instruments to defend its democratic order even against a far-right state government, but warned that the country is experiencing “tectonic shifts” across its party system. He acknowledged that neither he nor his government can simply continue operating as usual and conceded that they have not succeeded in connecting with voters on an emotional level.
The warning comes after the AfD’s extraordinary breakthrough in Saxony-Anhalt and exposes a much deeper challenge for Berlin than a single regional defeat. BIG | 🇺🇸🇮🇷🇺🇦‼️‼️ Former CIA Director David Petraeus is warning that the Iran conflict is exposing a dangerous imbalance in modern warfare, with the United States potentially having already consumed roughly half of some of its air and missile-defense interceptor stocks while Iran can keep imposing pressure with far cheaper drones and missiles.
Petraeus argued that Washington has major lessons to learn from Ukraine, which operates inexpensive drones on an enormous scale and extracts disproportionate battlefield value from them. He said using extremely expensive interceptors against Iranian drones costing around $50,000 is simply not sustainable over a prolonged conflict. Petraeus also pointed to Iran’s ability to threaten U.S. bases and critical Gulf energy infrastructure, highlighting the Iranian strikes that knocked roughly 15–17% of Qatar’s LNG export capacity offline for an estimated three to five years.
The warning goes well beyond Iran. America still possesses overwhelming military power, but a force structured around limited inventories of exquisite and expensive munitions can be strained by an adversary able to generate large numbers of cheaper threats. Ukraine has demonstrated how rapidly mass-produced drones can reshape the economics of warfare, and the Iran campaign is reinforcing the same lesson for Washington. Expanding interceptor production, developing cheaper defensive solutions and dramatically increasing the scale of U.S. unmanned systems are becoming strategic necessities rather than optional modernization projects.

The first evidence (of Putin’s plan to rebuilding the Soviet empire) was the invasion of Georgia. Six years later came Ukraine, which they tried to conceal through the appearance of the so-called little green men and hybrid warfare.
But the West did not respond appropriately. We did nothing about Georgia, and in 2014 we did not do enough to defend Ukraine.

Zelensky says the U.S. is exploring a winter de-escalation between Ukraine and Russia while trying to restart broader peace talks.
After Witkoff and Kushner met Putin in Moscow and Zelensky in Kyiv, Zelensky said the message was that “the Russians are ready to negotiate,” though he remains skeptical given Russia’s continued attacks.
Possible confidence-building steps could involve energy infrastructure, grain shipments, electricity, and oil and gas. Zelensky said the aim is to find measures “which can bring [the] sides closer to the peace.”
He believes Putin may be more flexible because “Putin needs Trump” and “doesn’t want … to upset him” before the U.S. midterms.
At the same time, Zelensky warned that Russia sees winter as a chance to pressure Ukraine: “Russia really thinks that this winter can help them to break us.”
Kyiv wants talks restarted in September or October. “Without dialogue … we will not have [a] result,” Zelensky said.
