Ukraine war latest: US envoys make first visit to Kyiv, protecting city from Russian missiles but producing few results

We may prefer certain formats of negotiations, but it’s worse when there are no formats at all. I want to recognize the role of Steve and Jared in restarting the negotiation process today. It is important that the American team met with the head of Russia, and today with me, and that we discussed all the possibilities. We had a trilateral meeting with the participation of the Europeans, as well as a meeting of national security advisors, and I think we will do everything possible to restore these negotiations.

I think that in the coming weeks, we – Ukraine, America, and Europe – will have an opportunity to discuss some details that we would rather not talk about publicly today. We want to have results and concrete proposals first. Several new ideas did come up, and we discussed them. Give us a chance to analyze them in depth first, understand the details, what steps could be taken, and whether this would bring us closer to peace. Then we will speak to the public.

A famous anecdote between Secretary of State Henry Kissinger and Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir during the Yom Kippur War:
HENRY KISSINGER
“Golda, you must remember that first, I am an American; second, I am Secretary of State; and third, I am a Jew.”GOLDA MEIR:
“Henry, you forget that in Israel, we read from right to left.”— @joanfromdc Sep 6, 2026
🚨🇺🇦 Zelensky says the Donbas question is not simply a territorial dispute, but the central issue of the entire war and a decisive test of Ukraine’s survival, endurance and ability to negotiate from strength.
The Ukrainian president stressed that Donbas is a strategic stronghold and that battlefield resistance in the east is what prevents diplomacy from turning into a series of Russian ultimatums. He said Russian forces have reinforced manpower in the sector and suggested Moscow could launch a new mobilization after the elections specifically to sustain pressure there. Zelensky also warned that winter will be a major challenge, pointing to serious financial needs for the military, humanitarian support and domestic defense production. Steve Witkoff, meanwhile, said the U.S. delegation first traveled to meet Putin in order to understand Moscow’s position before briefing Zelensky, adding that Washington remains confident a workable solution can eventually be found.
🔥 The core of Zelensky’s argument is that diplomacy only exists because Ukraine has not been broken militarily. Donbas therefore remains both the main battlefield and the main negotiating obstacle: if Kyiv loses leverage there, Moscow’s demands harden; if Ukraine holds, the space for a negotiated settlement remains open.

🚨🇺🇦 Zelensky has drawn a clear red line in the negotiations: Ukraine will neither surrender nor hand over Donbas to Russia, and Kyiv’s position remains unchanged.
The Ukrainian president also said the United States will increase Patriot missile production next year, with Ukraine expecting additional systems and interceptors. Addressing Russia’s recent attacks, Zelensky described the continuing terror as a new Putin tactic ahead of elections and promised a Ukrainian response. He added that Ukraine has become stronger over the course of this year and praised Ukrainian forces for creating the conditions in which diplomacy can still be given a chance.
🔥 The message is firm but calibrated: Kyiv is keeping negotiations open while refusing territorial capitulation and preparing for continued military pressure. More Patriot capacity would strengthen Ukraine’s ability to absorb Russian air attacks, while the Donbas issue remains the core political obstacle to any settlement.

BREAKING:
Germany has officially entered the war with Russia by providing Ukriane with long-range drones.
Germany is only NATO country which has taken steps to support Ukriane against Russia.

🇺🇦🇷🇺🇺🇸 Zelensky:
“Our Ukrainian anti-ballistic system will be ready in the near future.
The American side will increase next year the production volumes of anti-ballistic Patriot missiles.
And we expect that, in any case, God willing, the war will end, but we will still need them.”
Putin will want to end this war, on his terms, while Ukraine is waiting on those anti-ballistics…
Why would he sue for peace if he has the upper hand?
